Louise is traveling this weekend, spending time with the very thing that keeps her energized and inspired to do this work: her grandson. Susan C from our communications team relays some sentiments from Louise for this week’s Perspectives.
| As I write this, the clouds have cleared and the leaves of the trees outside my window are dancing in the breeze, shaking off the raindrops, and turning toward the sunlight. And yet, there is more rain in the forecast. It’s almost as though Mother Nature is laying out a metaphor for our political work of late, or maybe a just a reminder: there are breaks in the rain, bright, beautiful moments to celebrate, even if we sense clouds on the horizon. So let’s all take Louise’s lead this weekend and enjoy the sunlight, literally and metaphorically, while we have it. On that note, it’s not just birthdays and graduations that spark our joy as we head into June. Today we are celebrating a major win for New Hampshire voters: a federal judge overturned the documentary proof of citizenship requirement to vote, declaring it unconstitutional. Her ruling makes clear that HB 1569 “unduly burdens the fundamental right to vote, and indeed that the statute had already disenfranchised many NH voters and was likely to affect many more voters in future elections.” See ACLU press release. Huge congratulations to the ACLU and all the lawyers on this case and special thanks to the courageous plaintiffs – all of whom undertook this lawsuit to protect voting rights for each one of us! Although New Hampshire has some of the most restrictive voting laws in the country, the Granite State has a very high voter turnout rate, and this ruling will help it stay that way! If you are able, join Kent Streeters at the NH 50501 Liberty and Justice for All protest today in Concord as we celebrate and assert our power in the pursuit of justice and freedom for all. |
