Why are Executive Councilors Blocking Federal Funding for Childcare in New Hampshire?
The New Hampshire Executive Council voted to delay/deny $1.2 million in 100% federally funded child care support tied to the Department of Health and Human Services’ contract amendment with Pyramid Model Consortium.
This funding would strengthen Granite Steps for Quality (NH’s child care quality improvement system), expand professional development and coaching for child care providers, and improve support for children with disabilities and developmental delays.
Some Executive Councilors objected to diversity, equity, and inclusion language included in parts of the contract, putting critical child care resources at risk.
As communities across the country mark the National Day Without Child Care on May 11th to highlight how essential child care is to families, businesses, and our economy, New Hampshire cannot afford to move backward by blocking critical federal child care support.
If this funding is blocked, New Hampshire child care providers, businesses, working families, and children could lose important resources that strengthen child care quality, workforce participation, and inclusive access to care.
