ACTION ALERTS! Week of October 4, 2026
Please note: Some of these actions duplicate those found elsewhere in Happenings but we have heard that some readers with limited time find this short list helpful.
MomsRising
Action #1: Tell Congress to ensure that people have the power to make medical decisions about their own bodies!
Every person deserves the freedom to make their own choices about their body, health, and future. And everyone should be able to decide if they’re having children, and if so, when and how many. But right now, politicians are taking those choices away—and the cost is deadly.
Action #2: Demand your Congressional representative sign onto the EACH Act!
For 50 years, the Hyde Amendment has harmfully stopped federal health programs—like Medicaid—from paying for abortion care. This leaves many low-income families, military families, Indigenous people who receive care through the Indian Health Service, Peace Corps volunteers and government employees unable to afford the care they need.
The EACH Act would fix this. It would end the Hyde Amendment and make sure everyone can get reproductive healthcare, no matter how much money they make.
Right now, many lawmakers from both parties support this bill. There are 202 supporters in the House and 34 in the Senate, but we need your help to get it across the finish line.
Abortion care is health care. And most people who have abortions are already parents. Politicians should not interfere with our personal health choices.
Action #3: Tell Congress: Call on HHS to stop RFK’s attacks on Head Start!
A federally funded, community-based program, Head Start has provided over 40 million children with quality child care, healthy meals, medical screenings, and early developmental support services (and so much more!) over the last 60-plus years. Yet instead of helping kids who need it most by supporting Head Start, Secretary RFK Jr. is proposing deregulating and gutting core standards that would put the program at serious risk.

Easy sign & send a letter to Bow Town Officials and Granite Shore Power CEO: No AI Data Center in Bow, NH!
Citizens Petition Concerning New Hampshire Education Freedom Accounts (“Vouchers”): As of this month, the Children’s Scholarship Fund reported it has approved 12,500 Education Freedom Accounts, totaling over $60 million in state funding. Every dollar awarded through these vouchers is drawn from the Education Trust Fund, which was originally established to support New Hampshire’s public schools, but is now becoming a supplement to upper income families who already have their children in private schools or are home schooled. Please consider signing this petition.
Free Ben & Jerry’s: The Magnum Corporation is forbidding Ben & Jerry’s from speaking out for peace or justice. Help keep the heart, soul and spirit of Ben & Jerry’s alive by signing the petition. Watch this Roots Action video to learn more.

New Hampshire Peace Action
Action #1: Tell Congress to restore funding for Medicaid and SNAP!
In 2025, Congress passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” marking the largest-ever cuts to Medicaid and SNAP food assistance. Under this act, millions of people will be stripped of healthcare, and millions more will struggle to put food on the table.
The cuts are unfolding gradually, and more people are at risk of losing food assistance in the months ahead. As of Oct. 1, states must now pay a much bigger share of SNAP’s costs—forcing them to make deeper cuts to benefits and services.
Instead of investing in human needs, the government is funding more tax cuts for the rich, a bloated military budget, and ICE detention and deportation. We refuse to accept this.
Last Week’s Action:
US Senators Van Hollen, Kaine, and Sanders, along with eight other colleagues, announced their intent to introduce a resolution seeking answers about escalating violence in the West Bank of Palestine, including the killings of Americans by settlers. Read the full resolution proposal here.
Call Senators Shaheen and Hassan now and urge them to sign on now:
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen: (202) 224-2841 / (603) 647-7500
Sen. Maggie Hassan: (202) 224-3324 / (603) 622-2204
Your message could be as simple as:
“Hi, my name is ______ and I’m calling from ______, NH. I’m calling to ask the senator to cosponsor the upcoming resolution being proposed by Sen. Van Hollen concerning increasing violence in the West Bank, including the killings and detention of American citizens. I understand Senator ______ has previously supported S.2667, The West Bank Violence Prevention Act. I’d like to know where the senator stands on this new resolution and if she will again act to stop Israel’s violence.”

Last Week’s Action:
Tell Congress to pass the EACH Act and end the Hyde Amendment
The Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act or EACH Act, is federal legislation aimed at reversing the Hyde Amendment and related abortion coverage restrictions. Since 1976, the discriminatory Hyde Amendment has blocked people with Medicaid coverage from using their insurance for abortion care. This means Medicaid cannot cover abortion even when a person’s health is at risk and their doctor recommends an abortion.

ACLU
Action #1: Take action: Remind Governor Lee that the country is watching – and we will not accept another inhumane execution attempt.
This horrific story isn’t unique to Tennessee. Our country botched 276 executions between 1890 and 2010, because there is no foolproof way to kill a person, no matter how clinical the process looks.
Action #2: Congress must ban automatic license plate readers (ALPRs).
Whether it’s Flock, Axon, Motorola, or another company’s cameras that are watching, the problems are the same. They’ve created an unaccountable mass surveillance system that spies on us as we go to the doctors, drop our kids at school, attend religious services, and makes it easy for law enforcement to piece together where any of us might be at any time – regardless if we’ve been suspected of any wrongdoing.
Last Week’s Actions:
If you’ve been reading the news lately and thinking – “Is that even constitutional?” “Can they do that?” “How do we stop this?” – then the ACLU’s new podcast, Let The Record Show, is for you.
Every other week, our hosts, Shereen Marisol Meraji and Matt Beat, take a deep dive into the court cases that shape our everyday lives and the legal strategies the ACLU uses to go up against the government and protect our rights and freedoms.
